About this piece
This Italian postmodern sideboard by Carlo Malnati is distinguished by its sculptural, curved facade and finely executed inlaid wood marquetry. The front surfaces are composed of multiple wood species, carefully arranged to create an abstract, flowing composition in warm ochre, charcoal, and muted gray tones. Rather than applied decoration, the pattern is integral to the surface—giving the piece depth, texture, and a distinctly architectural presence.
The cabinet’s asymmetrical form is balanced by a contrasting black structural base, grounding the expressive front while reinforcing the piece’s strong postmodern character. A combination of drawers and a cupboard is seamlessly integrated into the curved elevation, allowing the graphic marquetry to read as a continuous plane across the front.
Both functional and art-forward, this sideboard works exceptionally well in contemporary interiors, Italian postmodern settings, or refined, gallery-like spaces where a single sculptural object is allowed to anchor the room. The craftsmanship of the inlaid wood elevates the piece beyond surface-level design, positioning it as a collectible example of late 20th-century Italian furniture.
